New To Touch
NEW TO TOUCH FOOTBALL?
Whether you’re brand new to sport, coming back after a break, or switching from another code, welcome to Touch Football — one of Australia’s fastest growing and most social sports.
Touch is easy to learn, exciting to play, and suitable for all ages and fitness levels. If you’ve never played before, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know to get started with confidence.
What Is Touch Football?

Touch Football is a minimal-contact sport derived from rugby league. Instead of tackling, players simply touch the ball carrier with their hands to stop play.
It’s fast, strategic, and all about:
-
Speed
-
Agility
-
Teamwork
-
Skill
With six players per team on the field, matches are continuous and high-energy — but accessible for beginners.
Why Choose Touch?
✅ No Heavy Contact
No tackling, no scrums — just skill and speed.
✅ Mixed & Social Friendly
Most competitions are mixed, making it a great sport for friends, families, and work teams.
✅ All Ages & Abilities
From juniors to seniors, beginners to experienced players — there’s a division for everyone.
✅ Great Fitness
Touch improves cardiovascular endurance, speed, and coordination — without the heavy impact of other contact sports.
Basic Rules (The Simple Version)

If you’re new, here’s the game in a nutshell:
-
Each team has 6 players on the field
-
The attacking team has 6 touches to score
-
After each touch, the ball is placed on the ground and rolled back (called a roll ball)
-
Players cannot pass forward
-
A try is scored by grounding the ball over the try line
After 6 touches, possession changes.
That’s it — simple to understand, exciting to master.
What Do I Need to Play?
Getting started is easy. You’ll need:
-
Comfortable sports clothing
-
Touch boots or moulded studs (no metal)
-
A positive attitude
Most competitions provide game balls and referees.
Positions Explained (Quick Guide)

While Touch is fluid, players generally fall into three roles:
Middles
Workhorses of the team. Strong runners who take the ball forward.
Links
Connect the middle to the edges. Quick decision-makers.
Wings
Speed players who finish tries and defend the sidelines.
Don’t worry — beginners rotate through positions to learn the game.
Is Touch Hard for Beginners?
Not at all.
Most competitions offer:
-
Beginner divisions
-
Social grades
-
Junior pathways
-
Come & Try days
If you can run, catch, and pass — you can play Touch.
Fitness & Skills Tips for New Players
If you’re preparing for your first season:
-
Practice short, sharp sprints
-
Work on quick passing under pressure
-
Improve your agility (side steps & directional changes)
-
Focus on communication — talking is key
Touch rewards smart play as much as athleticism.
What Makes Touch So Popular?
Touch Football combines:
-
The speed of rugby

The skill of netball-style movement
-
The fitness of interval training
-
The fun of social team sport
It’s competitive when you want it to be — social when you don’t.
