New to touch football? Here's why it might be the best thing you do this year
Jun 28, 2026
If you've ever watched a game of touch football and thought "that looks fun" — you're right, it is. But touch football is more than just a good time on a Monday or Wednesday night. For thousands of people across Newcastle and the Hunter Region, it's become a cornerstone of their week. Here's why.
Anyone can play
This isn't a sport for athletes only. Touch football is genuinely one of the most accessible sports in Australia. It's non-contact, the rules are simple to pick up, and at Wallsend we offer grades to suit all skill levels — from absolute beginners to competitive players who've been at it for decades. If you can run (or jog, or walk briskly), you can play.
We have Mixed, Men's, Women's, Family and Friends, and All Abilities competitions running across Monday and Wednesday nights. There's a grade for you, whatever your background.
The fitness benefits are real
A game of touch football involves a lot of short, sharp sprints — the kind of interval training that's excellent for cardiovascular fitness, agility, and coordination. Most people don't even notice they're working out because they're too focused on the game. It's the kind of exercise that doesn't feel like exercise, and that's a rare thing.
The social side is what keeps people coming back
Ask anyone who plays at Wallsend what their favourite part is and nine times out of ten they'll say the people. Touch football is a social sport at its core. You'll spend 40 minutes on the field working together as a team, and then head off into the evening having connected with your teammates, caught up with opposition players you know, and generally had a great time.
For people who are new to an area, re-entering the workforce, or simply looking for a social outlet, touch football communities like Wallsend are hard to beat. We've seen friendships and relationships built on this field that have lasted decades.
It's family-friendly
Many of our players bring their kids to games, and we have junior and cubs programs running alongside the senior competition. Upper Reserve is a fantastic facility — nine full-size playing fields, 18 junior fields, an air-conditioned clubhouse, canteen, and sports bar. It's a proper night out for the whole family.
What are you waiting for?
You don't need to have played before. You don't need to be fit. You just need to show up. If you don't have a team, register as an individual and we'll find one for you — it's that simple.
Registration is open now for our Monday and Wednesday night competitions. Head to our website to sign up, or come down to Upper Reserve on a game night and see what we're all about. We'd love to have you.
